When to book a stay in Las Vegas for less

It is cheapest in summer, when the desert heat hits 40C and rates fall to their lowest of the year. The priciest months are the cooler, event-packed ones, in spring and around the year-end, when crowds pour in for New Year and big shows. Here the day of the week is key: Tuesday tends to be the cheapest and Saturday the most expensive, as this is a party city and the weekend draws the most guests. About a week ahead is enough for a regular trip, though for the weekend and for big events it is better to book earlier.

What a stay costs by property type

Las Vegas has a huge range, from a hostel bed to a high-rise suite on the Strip. The cheapest sleep is in hostels and simple motels, while three- and four-star casino hotels can have very low room rates. Bear in mind, though, that a resort fee is added on site. Where a stay is cheaper and where it costs more

The most properties and the most guests are on the Las Vegas Strip, home to the largest resorts and usually the dearest, as is the area west of the boulevard. The cheapest is Downtown by Fremont Street, the older part of town with the light shows and classic casinos. The areas south of the Strip, near the airport, and east of the boulevard can also be cheaper. Below are indicative nightly prices in a few areas.

Downtown by Fremont Street usually works out noticeably cheaper than the Strip, while still close to the casinos and the shows. On the Strip you pay for the address and being next to the biggest resorts.

Which stay in Las Vegas suits whom

• First time in Las Vegas. The Strip is the easiest base, in the heart of the biggest resorts and casinos. From here it is a walk or a Deuce bus ride to the main attractions.
• Cheaper and classic. Downtown by Fremont Street, with the old casinos and the light shows. Good for a shorter, more budget-minded stay.
• For couples. Elegant resorts on the Strip, with pools, spas and restaurants in one place. In the evening the whole Strip is within a walk.
• Near the airport. Hotels south of the Strip, near Harry Reid airport, handy for an early flight or a short stopover.
• With breakfast. Some hotels include a buffet in the rate, though in Las Vegas it is more of an extra than the rule, as restaurants and buffets are everywhere.
• Day trips out of town. A base with parking makes day trips easy, to the Grand Canyon, the Hoover Dam or the Valley of Fire.
